Prof. Dr. Halit Turgay is a Turkish flutist, composer, and educator with an international career spanning performance, composition, and pedagogy.

He began his musical and flute education at the Istanbul Municipal Conservatory in 1978. After completing his undergraduate studies, he continued his training at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied with the internationally renowned flutist William Bennett. He later completed his Master’s degree and Doctorate in Arts at Istanbul University State Conservatory.

Flutist

Throughout his extensive career as a soloist and chamber musician, Halit Turgay has performed with ensembles including I Musici di Roma, the Savaria Symphony Orchestra, London Octave Chamber Orchestra, Presidential Symphony Orchestra of Türkiye, Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra, Eskişehir Metropolitan Municipality Symphony Orchestra, and many others.

Alongside the classical flute repertoire, Turgay has maintained a strong interest in contemporary music and works by Turkish composers, giving the Turkish premieres of numerous compositions.

He gained his first orchestral experience at the age of 16 with the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet Orchestra. In 1987, he won a position with the Mediterranean Youth Symphony Orchestra and served as principal flute during its European tour. He later held principal flute positions with the Şişli Symphony Orchestra from 2006 to 2008 and the Akbank Chamber Orchestra from 2008 to 2013.

Composer

Halit Turgay’s compositional language draws inspiration from the history, mythology, archaeology, landscapes, and cultural memory of Anatolia and the Mediterranean.

Drawing on his extensive knowledge of the flute and its expressive possibilities, Turgay composes across a wide range of genres, from solo and chamber works to concertos and orchestral music. His works have been performed internationally, published, and recognized by a number of international competitions and organizations.

Educator

With more than 30 years of teaching experience at conservatories and universities in Türkiye and abroad, Halit Turgay has contributed to the education and professional development of generations of flutists.

He began his teaching career at Istanbul University State Conservatory in 1989 and subsequently taught at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University Istanbul State Conservatory, Mersin University State Conservatory, Ankara Music and Fine Arts University, and at Tsinghua University / Symphony Academy in Beijing, China, where he taught flute and chamber music.

He currently continues his academic work at Maltepe University Conservatory.

Today, Turgay also brings his extensive pedagogical experience to a new generation of flutists through his own Flute School, offering online individual lessons as well as the Halit Turgay Flute Summer School, which he founded in 2003.
